Sensing Program

WRON will upgrade the hydrometric
network to digital – and open up
a world of possibilities with real-time
observation and analysis. We now have the
technolog yto do this.
A nationally coordinated monitoring system
retrofit, combined with an extension program,
will enable significant procurement savings.
It will also allow the seamless integration
of data into WRON, for maximum effect.
Similar benefits can be expected to follow
upgrades of water use metering, including
significant water savings from revelations
of over-extraction.
WRON will also be designed to include
rigorous, automated aquatic ecosystem health
assessment. For example, continuous video-
and acoustic-based assessments of fish
and wetland bird populations, and periodic
high-resolution remote sensing of floodplain
vegetation health could be included.
New measurement sensor and communication
technologies enable cheaper and more accurate
measurement, as well as the ability to
relay information to the outside world
in real time via the internet.
